Mechanical Equipment:
Twin reliable Ford Lehman 120 hp diesels have proven to be true workhorse engines for Grand Banks for many years. Rated for between 5,000 and 10,000 hours, the engine in Candy Apple have many more years of service left in them. Engines are fresh water cooled. Raw water cooling units, mufflers, and all hoses have been replaced in the past eight years. New stainless steel shaft with Drivesavers, cutlass bearings, and stuffing boxes were replaced in 2000. Both heads discharge to a large, centerline holding tank. This may be emptied at a pump out station or directly overboard in open waters. Electrical System:
Candy Apple is powered by 12vDC and 110vAC systems both managed at a custom electrical breaker panel adjacent to the lower helm station. AC power is provided from shore connection or by the generator. There are two large capacity 6v batteries in the house bank which allow for extended periods between charging. Two engine starting batteries are charged by an alternator off the port engine while the house bank is charged by an alternator off the starboard bank. Both banks may be charged from independent 110vAC battery chargers or from the 4.0 Kw Onan diesel generator. A Freedom Link 1000 monitor shows battery condition. Lightning protection is installed as is a Quicksilver galvanic isolator. Deck and Hull Equipment:
The hull and cabin are fiberglass and white. The boot stripe is blue and the bottom is painted with multi-season ablative paint in black with a blue signal coat. The traditional teak cap rails and handrails are varnished bright and surround the deck mounted on weather bronze stanchions. The decks and cockpit are unfinished teak and in good condition. The side decks are wide and movement around the boat is easy and safe. The foredeck has a large anchor bow sprit with a Bruce plow anchor, large bollard, and manual windlass. The aft cockpit leads to a varnished teak transom and a teak swim platform equipped with Weaver Snap Davits for a dinghy storage. Several steps up, the flybridge has lots of seating and is protected by a bimini and enclosure. The mast is hinged and may be lowered for bridge clearance. A second bimini aft provides protection for the aft cockpit.
