Visibility from the raised helm position is very good. A hatch provides routine access to the engines. and the entire command deck sole is removable for major work. Caterpillar 375-hp diesels were standard and GM 6V71TAs 435-hp were optional for a faster cruise and easy refreshing of the sleeved motor. This is a four owner boat. All 4 owners were well financially and have done the best for this boat. The first owner even kept her in a boat house till 2001. Her hull is the same as that used in the 3R III Convertible but with balsa coring placed in the hillsides forward of the engine bulkhead. The design philosophy behind the 3R Special was to give the bluewater angler a pure. no-nonsense fishing machine with ~ good performance and plenty of range. Although the interior is limited in size the rounded bulk- heads and radiuses corners make the most of the available space. Visibility from the raised helm position is very good. A small hatch provides routine access to the engines and the entire bridge deck sole is removable for any major work. Caterpillar 375-hp diesels were standard (23 knots cruse/27 knots wide open). GM 6V71TAs 435-hp were optional and increased the cruising speed to about 24/25 knots and the top speed to 29/30 knots.
